Electronic music makers ‘MGMT’ have revealed they turned down supporting a range of major musicans because they don't want to be seen as mainstream pop stars.
The America duo known for the track “Electric Feel” consisting of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Martin Goldwasser have said they rejected supporting roles for acts such as Lady Gaga, U2, Coldplay and the Foo Fighters as they do not want to be seen as ‘pop stars’.
Ben believes they have been "blown out of proportion" as a musical group because they always wanted to be a rock band and not a pop group.
Ben said: "Well, we really do feel like we were blown out of proportion by everybody. We don't feel like pop stars, we feel like a rock band. We don't want to play arenas. It's not our mission."
Andrew reinforced this saying: "I think on some level it is a reaction to the success of the first one. I mean, of course we were happy and felt lucky that stuff happened, but it wasn't really what we were shooting for. I think a lot of people misinterpreted and misunderstood what we were about."
The pair claim that because of this, they are making sure their new album “Congratulations” much different to the hit album “Oracular Spectacular.”
